An independent, blockbuster-style sci-fi action movie on a shoestring budget, shot in 4K? You might call it impossible, but director Thijs Meuwse calls it Kill Mode, his sophomore feature. Set in a bleak future prior to the events in Molly, Meuwse next takes his audience on a non-stop thrill ride through a Blade Runner-esque world. An outmatched group of scrappy freedom fighters bites off more than they can chew when they provoke the ire of an evil corporation with unlimited resources and a private army.Blending elements of dystopian science fiction and comic-book superpowers with gritty stunt work and special effects Kill Mode delivers high concept/low budget action magic. Raven Banner Entertainment (Tigers Are Not Afraid, Wolfcop), after acquiring worldwide sales rights, pitched the film as Mad Max meets Elysium meets Edge of Tomorrow. The company will kick off a worldwide sales effort in conjunction with the Toronto International Film Festival next month.Meuwse, in an interview with Modern Horrors, said it “plays out almost like the history of action movies, in a way … and mashes them into one story.” He also expressed his fondness for “classic 80s and 90s action movies with that industrial, lo sci-fi vibe,” citing examples like Terminator 2 and Aliens. He’s definitely putting those sensibilities into play with Kill Mode.high concept/low budget action magicUnfortunately, there’s still no release date yet as the sales agent works on wrapping up a distribution deal.
