Cinepocalypse Review: GHOST KILLERS VS. BLOODY MARY

Don’t miss out on Brazillian horror-comedy GHOST KILLERS VS. BLOODY MARY. After students report seeing Bloody Mary in a bathroom mirror, the principal of Issac Newton High School calls the Ghoulbusters to help. The Ghoulbusters—yes, knockoff Ghostbusters—are spunky YouTubers who fake hauntings to grow their popularity. When their ratings plunge into a freefall, they agree to help Issac Newton High fight off its vengeful spirit. But when the actual Bloody Mary shows up, the crew must try to fight off a dangerous presence for the very first time.

GHOST KILLERS VS. BLOODY MARY is oddly buoyant, self-aware and often very funny. There are lots of great one-liners and instances of breaking the fourth wall. Side characters joke about how disposable they are. Even summoning Bloody Mary is silly—one has to knock on a haunted bathroom stall door three times, flush the toilet three times, then call her name three times.

That doesn’t mean the horror is lacking, though. The gore looks fantastic—and be warned, there is a lot of it. Luckily, the ebullient accompanying score takes the bite out of the most grisly scenes.

GHOST KILLERS VS. BLOODY MARY is directed by Fabrício Bittar (Como se Tornar o Pior Aluno da Escola, Politicamente Incorrecto). Actors include Dani Calabresa (O Homem Perfeito), Léo Lins (The Noite com Danilo Gentili)Danilo Gentili (Como se Tornar o Pior Aluno da Escola), Murilo Couto (The Noite com Danilo Gentili). The acting is well done; Murilo Couto, in particular, gives a fantastic and physical performance as beleaguered Túlio. The actors understandably have great chemistry: Lins, Gentili, and Couto star in The Noite com Danilo Gentili together.

Not much is done to riff on the legend of Bloody Mary in any substantive way; nor are there attempts to push the limits of absurdity. But with it’s winning charm, GHOST KILLERS VS. BLOODY MARY is a funny, scary movie that is well worth the watch.
